To change the display of an index reference in Microsoft Word, you’ll need to access the index entry fields, which are hidden by default. You can reveal these fields by toggling the ‘Show/Hide’ option under the ‘Home’ tab. Once visible, locate the ‘XE’ (Index Entry) field that corresponds to the entry you wish to modify. This field contains the main entry and any cross-reference information within quotation marks. To alter the display, simply edit the text inside these quotation marks. After making your changes, you must update the index to reflect these edits. To do this, click on the index and press ‘F9’, or navigate to the ‘References’ tab and select ‘Update Index’. This will regenerate the index with your new display preferences. Remember, any changes made to the index entries must also be updated in the document’s index to maintain consistency.
