Inner and outer joins what’s that about in Microsoft Access

Relationship types in Microsoft Access are ways of defining how data in one table is related to data in another table. There are three main types of relationships in Access: one-to-many, many-to-many, and one-to-one.

– A one-to-many relationship is the most common type of relationship in Access. It means that each record in one table can have multiple matching records in another table, but each record in the other table can only have one matching record in the first table. For example, a customer can have many orders, but each order can only belong to one customer.
– A many-to-many relationship is a type of relationship in Access that requires a third table, called a junction table, to store the associations between the two main tables. It means that each record in one table can have multiple matching records in another table, and vice versa. For example, a product can be sold in many orders, and an order can contain many products.
– A one-to-one relationship is a type of relationship in Access that means that each record in one table can have only one matching record in another table, and vice versa. For example, a person can have only one passport, and a passport can belong to only one person.

To create a relationship between tables in Access, you need to specify which fields are used to link the tables together. These fields are called primary keys and foreign keys. A primary key is a field that uniquely identifies each record in a table. A foreign key is a field that references a primary key in another table. For example, if you have a Customers table and an Orders table, you can use the CustomerID field as the primary key in the Customers table and as the foreign key in the Orders table.

Relationships between tables in Access help you to ensure data integrity, avoid data duplication, and perform queries and reports that combine data from multiple tables.

A self join is a type of query that relates data in a table to itself. It is useful when you want to compare or combine records that share some common values within the same table. For example, you can use a self-join to find the names of employees and their supervisors based on an employee ID and a supervisor ID field in an employee table. To create a self-join, you need to add the same table twice to the query design grid and join the fields that contain the matching values. You also need to assign an alias to one of the tables to avoid confusion. A self-join can be either an inner join or an outer join, depending on whether you want to show only the matching records or all the records from one or both tables.

Types of join: option 1 is an inner join, 2 is a left outer join, and 3 is a right outer join.
