Task Priorities in Microsoft Project

Changing task priorities in Microsoft Project is a simple task. The first step is to open the task information dialogue box. The default task priority is 500 but the range allowed is 1 – 1000. A task with a priority of 1000 is a task that would not move during resource levelling. A task set to 1 would be the first task moved during resource levelling.

Resource Levelling

In resource options, the order of the levelling is set. There are three options: ID Only, Priority and Standard, Standard. The default setting is Standard. If the setting is ID only, the levelling looks at the task number order only. The Standard setting considers, dependencies, slack, dates, priorities and constraints. The Priority Standard, setting, forces the priority option first then the rest of the standard settings.

Management Use for Task Priority

There are occasions when the priority is used to sort or filter tasks. Even though the range is 1 – 1000, setting blocks of numbers for different activities is a better option. For example, engineering tasks maybe set at 600 while administrative tasks are set at 400. If all 1000 numbers are used separately it is very difficult to manage and is counterproductive.

Task Usage/Resource Usage

Task and resource usage views display assignment information but not and priority information. Add the priority column to either view and adjust as required.
