Split Tasks in Microsoft Project

Splitting Tasks

There are several ways to split a task in Microsoft Project, using the ribbon, using resource usage or resource levelling. Splitting a task may be required if there is over allocation issues or sickness.

Split Tasks using the ribbon

To split a task using the ribbon, select the Home tab and then the split tool. Once the tool is activated, move on to the task and notice the date. When you have reached the date that the split starts, click and hold your mouse dragging forward. You will see two dates, one is the start of the split and the other the end of the split. When you are happy let go and you will see several dots representing the split area.

Resource Usage

On the view tab click details and select resource usage as the bottom half of the screen. In the hour area, change the hours to zero, this in effect separates the task. You can also use this view to reduce resource allocated hours for a more accurate allocation.

Resource Levelling

The computer sometimes separates a task during resource levelling. This may occur at the start, in the middle or at the end of a task. It usually means that a resource is allocated elsewhere and the task cannot be moved.
